Today I have author of The Housekeeper's Son and executive editor of Jolly Fish Press, Christopher Loke!
And let me tell you, it's not nerve wracking at all to interview my boss. Nope. Not at all.
Me: So....uh....*wrings hands* Christopher.... do you find your writing inspiration by chewing cherry flavored bubble gum while dancing the hokey pokey or running from the lights of the Apocalypse - the bright lights (don't go toward the light! no, not the light, NO!!!!) *thinks to self - yeah, that was a good question, yeah. Yeah, I got this!*
Christopher: Neither. I find my writing inspiration hunting down stray zombies in the woods. With less zombies in the world, the world will be a better place to live, and when life is good, words fly out from nowhere.
Me: *Nods* *Smiles with glee* *Wonders how he knew I was a zombie fan?* *Realizes my editor has SUPER POWERS!* So....is your favorite food cupcakes with rainbow sprinkles or beef jerky (personally, I'd go with the cupcakes).
Christopher: I'm a sucker for sweet stuff. But to take it a notch further, my favorite food is a slice of citrus chiffon cake topped with a dollop of natural whipped cream drenched with brandy sauce. Light it on fire and caramelize the sugar into a crust of sweet gold, and there you have it: food fit for the gods.
Me: *Taps head pensively* *Stores information away for later when I need a bribe...I mean favor* How do you find time to write AND be a powerhouse exeuctive editor, weeding through slush and warding off typo inflicting agents? (yeah, I saw that Tweet to agents and writers Mrs. Lu).
Christopher: Despite popular belief, I don't weed off submissions. I have my acquisition editors help me on that department. And as for typo inflicting agents, I ward them off with my zombie-slaying bazooka. As far as time goes, I have very little to spare. Between reading manuscripts, dealing with authors, and making deals and negotiating with agents, I don't have too much time to write. But here's the deal, with the little time I have, I can still write a stellar piece of prose. Why? Because writing to me is a craft, not godsend. I don't rely on inspiration; I just write. Needless to say, I don't ever have writers block. In short, when it's time to write, I write. I never stop to think about what to write.
Me: *Smiles sheepishly* Right, I knew that. Of course. And I had no idea they made zombie-slaying bazookas. I will have to get me one of those! Anyway... will you sing us a song? (I'd go with yes. The Cannibal King is a popular favorite - I can teach it to you, if you like!)
Christopher: I will sing you a song. But be warned, you'll be swooned. Immensely.
Me: *Swoons* *Looks around, realizes there isn't any music* Why don't you just tell me about yourself.
Christopher: Hmm . . . I am creative, smart, extremely demanding and hard to work with, diligent, a perfectionist, and an obsessive compulsive clean freak, and a major food critic. I'm also the executive editor for a young press, Jolly Fish Press. The best thing about my job is to see a manuscript go from obscurity to fame with the right touches and treatment. And most of all, I love working with authors and seeing them grow in their writing career, shooting for the stars. I believe in giving every manuscript a chance to shine, which is why I read every manuscript with utmost care. I believe that as writers, we are often the underdogs, and it only takes one publisher to believe in us--I want to be that publisher.
Me: I hardly believe you're hard to work with. Afterall, you dealt with my...*quirky*... interview questions. It's been great working with you and the Jolly Fish team - not just on this interview, but on my manuscript as well! I'm so excited to have a publisher that believes in me, and my co-author! As a writer, when you get emails saying that you're AWESOME, it just kind of drives home the fact that you've found the right home for your book :)
As an added bonus, Mr. Loke has agreed to giveaway a copy of his book, The Housekeeper's Son!! I just finished reading it yesterday and I have one word: WOW!
As an added, added bonus, I'm giving away a query critique!! And trust me, I'm the Query Queen.
So one lucky winner will recieve BOTH prizes! Just leave a comment below and you'll be automatically entered. Contest ends this Friday, July 13th because that's just creepy enough to satisfy my need for darkness. Winner will be announced on Saturday, July 14th because that's just silly enough to satisfy my need for sweetness.
Afterall, a good book is dark and sweet like chocolate.
